Taking positive action for the benefit of our customers, communities, and the environment.
We’re committed to implementing sustainability initiatives that make a real difference, taking action across the business on a daily basis.
Our initiatives focus on the key pillars of sustainability which are:
1) Environmental (reducing carbon emissions, waste, and water use; promoting biodiversity; sustainable packaging)
2) Social (inclusion, equality, employee well-being, community support)
3) Economic (responsible sourcing, resilient supply chains, and investment).
We recognise the important role we play across these 3 pillars and are working with each of our stakeholders to make a positive impact.
UK Production
Each of our 4 production sites are in the UK helping to lower the business’s carbon footprint by cutting long-distance transport and food miles, reducing associated emissions, improving supply-chain efficiency, and enabling stricter environmental controls.
Renewable Energy
A vital part of our sustainability action plan, we have and will continue to implement initiatives that create renewable energy and include the use of more energy efficient machinery and utilities.
REDUCING WASTE
A key way to make an positive impact on our environmental footprint is to reduce waste, helping to conserve resources and lower emissions. We achieve this through making our processes more efficient, greater levels of ingredient utilisation, recycling materials, and reducing packaging.
Our packaging initiatives
As a drinks manufacturer, packaging is an integral part of our daily business, both in terms of how ingredients are received and how final products are packaged and supplied to the market.
We’ve been implementing a wide range of initiatives to reduce packaging, adopt more sustainable packaging and ensure more packaging is recycled.
We have outlined below examples of some of the recent changes.
All our plastic bottles now use recycled plastic to ensure a greater utilisation of recycled plastics
1,300
1,300 solar panels have been installed on the Headcorn factory roof to generate renewable clean energy.
4.6m
We have eliminated all black plastic packaging by switching 4.6M caps to clear, tethered caps – a more recyclable plastic with tethering helping to ensure caps remain with the bottles during the recycling process.
50%
We have installed LED efficient lighting throughout the production areas, cutting the power needed to light the factory by 50%.
Citrus Pulp Utilisation
Forming part of our objective to reduce waste and achieve greater ingredient utilisation, much of our citrus peel by-product that results from our freshly squeezed juice production is taken away to be used as animal feed on UK farms.
This is an initiative which has been a great success and something that together with our supply partners, we’re looking to grow significantly in coming years.
When the animals eat citrus pulp, they usually get a higher fat or protein percentage. It also contains a high grade of ascorbic acid, also called vitamin C, which has good health effects on livestock. The nutritional values in citrus pulp creates great preservative properties so its a win-win for the animals and the environment, helping to reduce waste significantly.
Wonky Fruit
Another initiative ingrained in our sustainability programme is a commitment to use wonky fruit, helping to prevent fruits from being wasted and enabling a circular approach to production.
Wonky fruit we utilise includes a wide range of citrus fruits along with apples, strawberries and pineapple to name just a few. This enables us to support sustainable farming and make better use of available resources.
Solar Panels
A recent initiative linked to our aim to increase renewable energy used by the business is the installation of 1,300 solar panels on our Headcorn factory roof.
These have the capacity to generate up to 560 megawatts of renewable clean energy each year -the equivalent of powering 1,825 homes.
This reduces our annual CO2 emissions by 107 tonnes and directly supports the UK’s Clean Power 2030 trajectory.
